Big cars deliver big sales for Kia

Two of Kia's leading large cars helped the Korean manufacturer to record impressive sales in December - despite the fact that the market was declining.

Impressive sales of the Kia Grand Carnival and the Kia Sorento helped the marque to record an increase of 5.4 per cent on the previous year, with new car sales reaching 25,128 overall.

According to the latest VFACTS data, the Kia Grand Carnival maintained its domination of the People Movers segment, claiming 35.9 per cent of the new car sales.

The Kia Grand Carnival sales for December were recorded at 267 - more than double the next best performer.

Likewise, year-on-year growth for the award-winning Kia Sorento medium SUV rose to 24.5 per cent.

The compact Kia Sportage SUV also performed strongly with annual sales of 3,602 for annual growth of 17.2 per cent.

"In what was a challenging year the outcome is in line with our forecasts and aligned with the business plan for the year," Kia chief operating officer Tony Barlow said (January 12).

Mr Barlow anticipates that this success will continue well into 2012.
